Northland Pines High School (NPHS) will present the musical fable “Guys and Dolls” in performances scheduled at 7:00 pm Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11; and at 2:00 pm Sunday, Feb. 12 in the NPHS Auditorium. Directed by NPHS Choral Director Kate Janssen with assistance from student directors Benn Gober and Taylor Haugen, this is the third annual musical production at NPHS in recent years. The musical is set in 1949 New York City, and follows a group of loveable gamblers through their tribulations to set up this week’s floating dice game, run by the loveable but shady Nathan Detriot. Meanwhile, Nathan’s lovesick fiancée of 14 years, Adelaide, is trying to nail down a date for their wedding. Sarah Brown is short on sinners at the mission she runs, and the highest gambler of them all, Sky Masterson, has just bet $1000 that he could convince Sarah to run away to Havana with him.
The two-act musical involves a cast and crew of 60 NPHS students and a live 13-piece pit orchestra. The production includes 18 musical numbers, including the well-known numbers "Luck Be a Lady", “Guys and Dolls", “Adelaide’s Lament”, “A Bushel and a Peck”, “If I Were a Bell”, and "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat.”
Tickets go on sale February 1st in the NPHS office and are $5 for adults and $2 for seniors and students. Tickets will also be available at the door one hour before the performance, and doors will open 30 minutes prior to the performance. For more information, call the NPHS Office at (715) 479-4473 x 1.
“We have a great group of students in cast, crew, and pit orchestra this year. They have worked incredibly hard on creating fun, interesting characterizations of the gamblers, in addition to accents, dance numbers, and creating a believable group of mid-century New Yorkers”, says Janssen. Applications are entered into a national database used by educational institutions to determine student eligibility and determine each individual student’s financial aid level.
