Anyone working on their GED is strongly encouraged to finish the five-test sequence by the end of 2013 or face the prospect of starting over next year.
“The national organization that administers the GED program will implement a series of new tests in 2014 that will be required to earn this academic credential that’s equivalent to a high school diploma,” said Jim Begotka, director of Learner Success at Nicolet College. “We want to make sure that anyone who has started their GED knows about these changes so they can finish their GED by the end of the year. This is the only way students will get credit for work they’ve already completed.”
He added that Nicolet offers free GED preparation classes throughout the Northwoods to help students better prepare and successfully complete the GED tests. These classes, offered through the college’s Academic Success department, are held on the Nicolet Campus just south of Rhinelander, in the Curran Building in downtown Rhinelander, and in numerous other communities including Minocqua, Eagle River, Tomahawk, Lac du Flambeau, Crandon, Carter and Mole Lake.
“Earning a GED is important in many different ways,” Begotka said. “It opens the door to college, better and higher paying jobs, and the personal sense of accomplishment that comes from earning this valuable academic credential.”
Annually, more than 200 students earn their GED or HSED through Nicolet College’s Academic Success program.
He also said individuals need to beware of the scams related to GEDs. “The Wisconsin technical colleges are the only institutions that can offer official GED testing,” he noted.
Nicolet College offers the GED test on paper and now also in computer-based formats. If an individual does not meet the minimum required score, students can retake the test for free. This only applies to the computer-based testing option.

Warren Nelson Outfit to perform (Rhinelander)
Musical pizzazz, style and humor will be front and center when Warren Nelson and his trio of musicians take to the Nicolet College Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 21.
Nelson, best known as a founder of the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua, is treasured for his talents as a songwriter, poet, historian and entertainer.
Nelson founded the Big Top in 1986 and for 23 seasons served as its charismatic stage presence. In 2008 he received the Wisconsin Governor’s Award In Support of the Arts.
His repertoire of more than 500 songs capture our unique Wisconsin and Upper Midwest history and culture. Touring as the Warren Nelson Outfit, Nelson’s fellow musicians include Severin Behnen, Andy Dee and Rowan Nelson-Ferris.
Piano and accordion performer Behnen is known for his eclectic approach to music making and for the breadth of his composition work for theatre and film in the United States and abroad. He received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from UCLA in 2008 and regularly performs with and composes for various musical ensembles, including Tango Nuevo, Laberinto, and Saffron Parade, as well as organizing various other performances of his music. Behnen currently teaches at Los Angeles Valley College.
Master slide guitar artist Dee has performed and recorded with The Blue Canvas Orchestra, Corey Carlson, Randy Sabien, the Hillbilly Voodoo Dolls, Molly & the Haymakers and many other groups. As one of the Dough Bros, Dee has toured and recorded with slide guitar master Paul Mayasich.
Nelson-Ferris, the son of Warren Nelson, has been creating excitement with his banjo finger-picking prowess that some say surpasses his dad’s. The father-and-son duo travels and performs throughout Wisconsin.
“This will be an evening of high-spirited music,” said Nicolet Theatre Director Jim Nuttall. “On tap will be folk, swing, bluegrass and a bit of jazz, all peppered with the story-telling for which Warren Nelson is famous.”

As a sponsor and host of the PMTT, tourism in the area will be impacted significantly during the timeline of the tournament. Many Musky Anglers are booking 4 – 6 night stays in our hotels and resorts so they can do their homework and pre-fish the tournament. Another benefit of hosting the PMTT is the extended exposure of the Eagle River Area to millions of viewers on the FoxSports North Network for a 30 minute television program featuring Eagle River and the Eagle River PMTT tournament.
Further more, the Eagle River Area is being mentioned in all PMTT advertising and press releases throughout the United States. This includes their official publication, “Musky Hunter” magazine, which will not only promote the June 22nd & 23rd event, but will provide additional editorial support discussing the Eagle River Area. Add to that will be other fishing publications, newspapers, and various web sites on the internet covering PMTT events, giving the Eagle River Area even more promotional exposure.

High-Flying Fun Hits the Vilas Theater in (Eagle River)
“Airplane!” Co-director / Co-Writer Jim Abrahams to Appear / Special Tourism Announcement
EAGLE RIVER, WI - Shirley, we’re joking, but we’re not. Growing up near Milwaukee and with his childhood buddies David and Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams’ name is connected as director and writer to some of the most successful comedies in film history (“Airplane!,” “Naked Gun,” “Ruthless People,” “Hot Shots.”) In the summer, he calls the Eagle River area his home.
Abrahams along with Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett will be hosting a special free screening of Jim’s classic 1980 comedy “Airplane!” Friday, June 28 at the Vilas Theater, 216 E. Wall Street in Eagle River starting with a 5 p.m. reception, program and 6 p.m. screening of the film. The event is free.
As part of the program Klett will screen Tourism’s new summer TV ad shot at Plum Lake in Sayner, directed by David Zucker and starring his “Airplane!” star Robert Hays and announce Abraham’s upcoming involvement in some new Wisconsin tourism TV commercials.
“Stephanie Klett has roped me into doing something for Wisconsin tourism,” said Abrahams from his palatial, but modest Los Angeles home. “I’m not at liberty to discuss it until the June 28th event in Eagle River.”
Klett said she hated to disrupt Abraham’s fun and relaxing summer in the North Woods, but the Badger State needs to take him off his hammock for a few days for some state promotional work. “Jim’s going to help us have some high-flying fun,” she said.
The event is co-sponsored by the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce, Discover Mediaworks, Conway Theaters and Vilas County Tourism & Publicity. Refreshments will be provided by Sprecher Brewing and Trig’s. The event is free and seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Advance tickets (limit of four per person) are available at the theater box office during regular hours or at the door the night of the event (while supplies last).

The race includes a ¼ mile swim, an 18-mile bike, and a 3.1-mile run. Participants can choose to do all three legs of the race on their own, or compete as a team of two or three people. Registration for the event is open until the morning of the event, with the race beginning at 9 a.m.

They have reported enjoying the scenery, including the easy sloping terrain of the bike ride, and the views of the lake as they run on blacktop, gravel and grass along the shoreline. Timing & Event Services, awards for top finishers in each age category, a catered lunch, official race t-shirt, a free annual subscription to Silent Sports magazine (one per household), and a goody bag with gifts from the sponsors. Michigan based historian Bill Jamerson will perform a program of unique songs and stories about Michigan's Upper Peninsula. With guitar in hand, Jamerson tells stories and performs original songs about iron miners, early immigrants, ski jumpers, pasties, thimble berries and the Finnish people. Many of the stories he tells are based on interviews with iron miners and other longtime residents of the U.P. The songs range from heart-warming ballads to foot stomping jigs. The seamlessly integrated songs and stories are as entertaining as they are important, as honest as they are fun. They are about people both ordinary and extraordinary and include stories of wit, charm, and strength. The Ontonagon Herald called Bill, “The Upper Peninsula’s troubadour.” Jamerson also wrote a novel about the Civilian Conservation Corps, produced eleven PBS films on Michigan history and has recorded three CD’s of songs about Midwest history.
